Hardware…

July/29 2009 by Marc

…. recommendations for Ventuz is one of your most popular questions we are being asked on a regular basis. Usually we just say go for whatever you like as long as it is state of the art technology. Sometimes we add comments like “we would go for Intel CPU” or “you better choose Nvidia than ATI” or “high FSB is recommended” or …..

To be honest, we leave you in the clouds!

To give you an idea what we would go for, here is the shopping list for our new Demo system which we assembled yesterday.

Housing: Chenbro RM42200 19″ 4RU (~170 EUR)
Power supply: Be Quiet! E6-650W 80+ Straight Power 2.2 (~100 EUR)
Motherboard: Intel DX48BT2 (~200 EUR)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 (~140 EUR)
RAM: DDR3 PC1600 4096MB OCZ KIT Platinum CL7 (~70 EUR)
GPU: ASUS ENGTX275 HTDI/896MD3 (~175 EUR)
HDD: RAID 1 with 2 x 250 GB Seagate ST3250310NS (~100 EUR)
DVD: LG GH22NS black SATA (~30 EUR)

Total ~990 EUR excluding Tax and shipping.

Comments: The reason why we go for the Chenbro is because they are rock solid, easy acessible and we have a flight case for 19″ 4RU. But if they are not flying around, we use them in the office like a normal tower underneith the desk or desktop on the desk.

OS: Windows XP Professional with SP3

The system got 158.331 points in CrystalMark2004R3

Brainbox & Who Wants To Be A Millionaire

July/22 2009 by Ralf

BBC’s BRAINBOX is a great example for the flexibility of Ventuz for TV broadcast shows.
The combination of Ventuz Professional and Broadcast Edition gave the integrators “Cat&Mouse TV” the freedom needed for innovation!

as well the the US Edition of  Who Wants To Be A Millionaire is a nice prove.

Even if the contestants don’t know what  “Bacardi” actually is …

Here is the house

July/21 2009 by Andre

Howdy,

again some pretty nice stuff from our Czech collegues who used Ventuz for visuals on an old post office.

Although I noticed similar ones at the stereolize blog , this is the first I have seen done with Ventuz so far.

Jindrich from Artcom.cz also linked some photos at flickr from this project.

Thx guys for this wicked idea. Hopefully there are some more “non-Express” projects in the future….

Any idea where my headline comes from ?  :)

“heute” 4.0

July/20 2009 by Marc

ZDF – Germany’s national public television broadcaster  - updated their flagship 7pm news show “heute”. The redisign and technical modifications of the 700sqm virtual studio cost 30 million Euro.

The goal of the new studio is to meet the expectations of the “internet generation”, therefore ZDF uses many 3D animations and effects.

Unfortunately, it will take a while until viewers will get used to it. Comments from the internet chat about the new studio were mainly negative. Comments were ranging from “to funky, boring, surreal” to “give us back the old cosy studio”.

I would say nothing to worry about, people are always like this.  It should not always be the Necessity which drives inventions. if no one takes the risk of changing a good running system …. there would be no need for us to invent all that funky stuff for you!

To be honest, it is not Ventuz which powers this new studio. Most probably this will have have one of the following reasons. First: decissions and processes in german public televison take a long time. We most probably didn’t even sold our broadcast edition when they started working on their new studio. Second: By choosing Ventuz, they would have had to much money left in their budget! ;-)

But we are good sportsman … Congrats whoever did it!

We are ready to raise the bar even higher, therefore expect us to strike back!

Retrieving XML data from Weather.com

July/15 2009 by Ralf

Many peaple asked me how to retrieve “simple” XML data from a HTTP based server. Here you get an example…

The Weather Channel

The Weather Channel

The Weather Channel for example provides this kind of service (free of charge). They call it XOAP, XML Weather Feed.

To be able to receive data (for non-commercial use), you’ll need to sign up for an account (don’t worry! They won’t spam you)

http://registration.weather.com/registration/xmloap/step1

Most of those HTTP based XML feeds need a simple URL to query the data.
For TWC it looks like this:

http://xoap.weather.com/weather/local/[location]?cc=*&link=xoap&prod=xoap&par=[partnerID]&key=[password]&unit=m

The three fields (location, partnerID and password) have to be filled with the proper information. Without a valid account you won’t receive any data!
The location code can be found on the www.weather.com web site. Simply query a location and copy the code from your browsers address bar. Hamburg, Germany for example has the location code: GMXX0049

The Weather Data Content Container

With the URL node of Ventuz its easy to construct this kind of URLs. The resulting URL is passed to an XML File node to receive the actual XML data. The Ventuz Express edition will stop rendering during this process, because it can’t handle the request in the background. The Broadcast/Professional editions don’t interfere the rendering, because the XML request is marked to be processed asynchronously.

Several XPath nodes are used to select the required information from the returned XML document. This values are “exposed” from the Container to make them easily accessible for other Ventuz nodes.

I’ve created a simple Ventuz Repository with some elements to acces TWC XML data. Simply download the repository here:

The Weather Channel REPOSITORY

… unzip it at you preferred location and open the Repository in you Project within the Ventuz Designer.

You’ll find 3 items:

  • The “Weather Data” content node. This node hold all logic to receive the data and provides usefull output properties to handle/display the incoming data.
  • The “Weather Icon” hierarchy node simply loads the correct icon texture depending on an icon number. The number matches exactly the icon codes of TWC.
  • An “Example” scene, which show how you could use this two elements in conjunction with simple text fields and arrange nodesTo open the scene from the Repository, click on the “New Scene from Wizard” button and select “Example”.
    newscenewiz
scenerootBtw, if you want to provide Scene-Templates within your own repositories, simply drag and drop the Scene-Root into it.
As soon a user has opened that repository in his/her project, the “New Scene Wizard” will show all contained as available scene templates!

Dongle shortage……. 3G and 4G have now arrived!

July/3 2009 by Marc

Many of our customers who bought Ventuz in the last couple of weeks had to wait longer than usual for their dongles being shipped. Usually we try our very best to make sure the dongle is in your hands within two business days after placing the order. Unfortunately, because production period of USB-sticks are very short, the dongle-model we used so far was not available anymore. We were forced to evaluate its successor, a black model with 1GB of memory.

We ordered a large number after testing the technical parameters and quality.

This now becomes the 3rd Generation (3G) of Ventuz Dongles!

1st Generation (1G) was the silver dongle with the transparent cover and VENTUZ print. This dongle was delivered with all copies of Ventuz 2006.

2nd Generation (2G) is the silver dongle with STEC print and 128MB of memory. This dongle is necessary in order to run Ventuz 2008 and was so far shipped when you purchased Ventuz 2008.

The 3rd Generation will be the new black STEC dongle with 1GB of memory and no print. Since STEC postponed the delivery of those dongles several times, we already had a pretty long waitlist for dongles. We finally received the 3G dongles last week and immediately started shipping them to customers. If they are not already sold out before we are able to do it, we will customize the dongles with a VENTUZ print.

Life could have been perfect. BUT shortly after we placed the firm order for 3G, we received the information that STEC increased the minimum quantity for further orders to an incredibly large number.

Therefore we had to start looking for a new device once again. After a long and hard evaluation process, we decided to go for a very compact Verbatim based model in our beloved Ventuz CI color.

After the customization process, this dongles will become the 4G Ventuz dongle. So far the dongle has the Verbatim print, but it will be shipped with the VENTUZ logo print. We are currently evaluating lanyards to be used with the dongle, in order to make it better visible. The specs of the dongle are 30 x 12 x 2 (mm) and the weight is 1.2 gramm.

4G is not implemented in Ventuz yet and will only work with Version 5.17 (not released) and newer. Shipping of 4G starts after 3G is sold out or on special request after the dongles are back from customizing and branding and 5.17 has been released!

4G will last very long….. we ordered A LOT

May the force be with you!

Best

Marc
